SUBJECT
Interior Light in Rear Hatch Loose/Broken

MODEL
X5

SITUATION
Some customers may complain of the luggage compartment (hatch) interior light being loose or broken. The light may be hanging loose from the hatch and the locking clip will not hold it in place.

CAUSE
The foam padding surrounding the suppression box in the hatch may have been incorrectly installed on X5 vehicles from start of production until October 11, 2001. The foam is installed to block any light from showing around the edges of the trunk trim. There is either too much foam or the foam is in the wrong area around the suppression box. The excess foam places too much pressure on the locking clip that holds the interior light to the rear hatch cover. Exposure to heat and repetitive action of closing the hatch can cause the clip to break.

CORRECTION
In case of customer complaint, the foam padding on the side of the suppression box should be moved to a different area. The foam should go in between the wiring harness and the suppression box. If the locking clip on the light is broken replace the light with part # 63 31 8 382 358.
