SUBJECT
PDC Sounds Continuously, No Obstruction Present

MODEL
X5 (E53)

SITUATION
Customers complain that intermittently, after selecting Reverse, the PDC sounds continuously, although there is no obstruction.

Remember that PDC (front and rear) is automatically switched on after Reverse has been selected. For this reason, the customer description of the problem may imply that the problem is at the rear of the vehicle.

CAUSE
The front license plate holder interferes with the PDC signal.

CORRECTION
Follow the procedure below:

-- During new vehicle PDI (Only necessary in States which require the installation of a front license plate). Note that technical changes to the PDC system will be implemented on series production vehicles shortly, at which time this modification will no longer be required. This SIB will be updated at that time.

-- On a customer complaint basis, and if no other problems can be found with the PDC system (no obstructions from accessories, sensors free of dirt/snow etc., sensors installed correctly, no PDC fault codes).

PROCEDURE

Remove the front license plate holder.

Using a heat gun (1), warm the tabs (2) on either side of the license plate holder.

Bend the tabs outwards and hold in position until the plastic cools and the tabs accept their new position. In the new position the tabs should be displaced 1/4 in. (A) from their original position.

Reinstall the front license plate holder
