SUBJECT
Steering Column Electrical Adjustment Inoperative
MODEL
E53 (X5 Sports Activity Vehicle)
SITUATION
Steering column may not adjust automatically during comfort entry/exit or may not be manually adjusted by using the stalk control.
CAUSE
Pinched or chafed steering column motor wiring harness.
CORRECTION
Inspect both vertical and horizontal motor wiring harnesses for any pinched or chafed wires.
PROCEDURE
1. Repair any damaged wires.
2. Install edge protector, Part Number 23 14 8 372 833 as required onto the sharp edge. This edge protector can be ordered in a unit of 1 meter long and can be cut into appropriate length.
3. Verify for proper steering column operation.
4. If the steering column still fails to operate in either vertical or horizontal direction, replace the correct motor: Part Number 67 64 6 903 946 for vertical movement or Part Number 67 64 6 903 945 for horizontal movement. Cable strap part number 61 13 1 367 599 may be used to properly secure the wiring harness.
PRODUCTION
Improvement to protect the steering column motor wiring harnesses has been made since June 2002.
