PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS OR PRIOR TO CUSTOMER NEW CAR DELIVERY.
SUBJECT:
E53 X5 3.0 DME Reprogramming: Thermostat Monitoring Diagnostics
MODEL:
E53 X5 3.0 with M54B30
SITUATION
The thermostat monitoring calibration, in the DME, may allow FC 168, "thermostat mechanically stuck open" to store, if the heater blower is set to "high" (maximum heat or defrost demand) during the engine warm up phase. Although FC 168 is set, the thermostat may not have a mechanical failure.
The "check engine" lamp may illuminate if FC168 is stored. Drivability of the vehicle is unaffected.
CAUSE
DME calibration
CORRECTION
Reprogram the DME with CD27.1 or higher.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E53 X5 3.0 vehicles with the M54B30 engines, which were produced from 4/2000 to 7/2001.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this service action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
PROCEDURE
1. Check the DME fault memory (even if the "check engine" lamp is not
illuminated) to determine if FC 168 is stored.
2. If FC168 is not stored, reprogram the DME with CD27.1 or higher to complete this repair.
3. If FC 168 is stored in the DME, printout the fault environmental conditions.
4. Compare the values shown from the FC 168 environmental conditions (arrows above).
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 317 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-170) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 317 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty without regard to vehicle age or mileage. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be through campaign entry.
Important:
Submit a separate warranty claim for thermostat replacement.
