March 2003

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there is a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 03V-032: Check Safety Belt Tensioner

MODEL
E85 (Z4), E53 (X5)

SITUATION
The connection of the safety belt buckle to the steel cable of the tensioner does not meet BMW specifications. In severe frontal crashes this connection can detach.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This recall involves E85 (Z4) and E53 (X5) vehicles, which were produced between June 20, 2002 and September 4, 2002.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Check the production date of the belt buckle and, if necessary, replace the lower strap including the belt tensioner.

PROCEDURE

Check the production date on both front belt buckles (see illustration). This can be found on the inside of the belt buckle.

The production date is coded. The first two digits signify the week, the next digit the day, the following two digits the year and the last digit the production shift.

Replace the lower strap if the production date code is from 253021 to 265022. (This corresponds with a production date range of between 19.06.02 and 28.06.02).

For E85 installation instructions, refer to the "Overview of airbag modules, seat belts and airbag igniters" repair instructions, RA 72 12..., under item 7: "Left/right belt tensioner".

For E53 installation instructions, see the "Remove, refit or replace (fully) the front left or right seat belt" repair instructions, RA 72 11 030.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This recall has been assigned code number 352. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-205) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 352 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
