SUBJECT
Reactivation of BMW Assist(TM) Services

MODEL
All vehicles with BMW Assist(TM)

SITUATION

The embedded phone within the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) is deactivated with the wireless carrier if the subscriber has allowed BMW Assist(TM) services to lapse, declined the services, or was never enrolled. The subscriber status can be checked on DCSnet. Refer to Aftersales bulletin B02 01 06 (Updated DCSnet Vehicle History Inquiry information on BMW Assist) for more information.

The TCU should not be replaced, but reactivated per the following
procedure if the customer wishes to enroll and receive BMW Assist services.

PROCEDURE FOR EQUIPPED WITH AN I/K-BUS TCU (E.G. E46, E53, E83, E85)

1. If the customer wishes to reactivate BMW Assist services a customer must complete a valid, active subscriber agreement with the BMW Assist Response Center through the enrolment application on DCSnet located at Sales | BMW Assist | Electronic Subscriber Agreement.

2. Upon completion of an Electronic Subscriber Agreement (ESA), a new Mobile Identification Number (MIN) and Mobile Device Number (MDN) will be automatically assigned and then displayed on DCSnet Vehicle Service History for 1 week. Print this page to assist in programming and verification.

^ If a new MIN and MDN are not automatically assigned during enrollment or are no longer displayed on DCSnet Vehicle Service History, obtain this information by faxing the BMW Assist reactivation form. A return call or fax from a Telematics Analyst with the new MIN and MDN will occur within three hours during business hours (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM EST). If the customer is waiting, fax the BMW Assist reactivation form and call the Telematics Analyst to expedite the process.

3. Once you receive the new MIN and MDN, simultaneously press the road side assistance "Wrench" button and the mayday "SOS" button for greater than 8 seconds. The TCU will automatically place two calls approximately 20 seconds apart.

^ First call - "*22890" will be displayed on the radio or status line on the Board Monitor (BM). The TCU will make a connection to the network provider. A verbal message will be heard that the phone is being programmed. At the end of the programming a message should be heard that the phone was successfully programmed.

^ Second call - "*22891" will be displayed on the radio or status line on the Board Monitor (BM). The TCU will make a connection to the network provider. A verbal message will be heard that the roaming capabilities are being updated. At the end of the call a message should be heard that the roaming capabilities were successfully updated.

If you do not hear the message that either of the calls were successfully completed, the process must be repeated.

If BMW Assist Inactive is displayed during the process and the system did not attempt to make either call, refer to [NEW] SI B84 07 07. The vehicle must be located within the Verizon Wireless coverage area and have adequate signal strength for this process to be successfully completed

4. Switch the ignition off for 10 seconds. The new MIN and MDN have now been imported into the TCU.

5. Test the BMW Assist(TM) service for proper operation by placing a test call using the SOS button. Make sure the BMW Assist Response Center has the correct MIN, MDN, VIN and location for the vehicle. Have the representative update their records as needed.

PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MOST-BUS TCU E.G. (E60, E63, E65, E70, E90, ECT.)

3. Once you receive the new MIN and MDN, use the following path within the DIS or GT1 to check and write the new MIN and MDN.

^ Perform a short test

^ Function Selection

^ Complete vehicle

^ Body

^ Audio, video, Telephone and navigation (MOST)

^ Telecommunication / Telephone

^ Fixed Installation (This selection is omitted on 3 Series vehicles without CCC)

[NEW] Note:
To comply with wireless service provider restrictions, when a BMW Assist account expires, BMW of North America, LLC must prevent the Network Access Device (NAD) from registering on the wireless network. If a BMW Assist account expired and the vehicle was produced after 9/05 production, BMW may send the Power Off Command (POC) to the TCU. This means the NAD will not turn on or register on the network.

[NEW] When a TCU receives the POC the DIS/GT1 will not be able to communicate with the NAD. When the DIS/GT1 is unable to communicate with the NAD, the tester will NOT display any information when trying to read the ESN/MIN/MDN. For vehicles which have received the POC, an alternate test module must be used to turn the NAD back on.
