The X5 3.0i comes with an S5D-280Z 5-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. It is also available with the A5S 360R 5-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic shifter.

The X5 4.4 is equipped with the A5S 440 Z automatic transmission with the "Steptronic" shifter. The tail shaft housing of the A5S 440 Z transmission has been modified to allow the transfer case to be bolted up for use in the X5.


The X5 4.6iS is equipped with the ZF A5S 440Z automatic transmission. The ZF A5S 440Z transmission has been modified internally to handle increased power output of the 4.6L engine, these modifications include a higher stall speed torque converter, internal components and management system tuned for performance. The mangement system is version EGS 8.60.2, this transmission system is unique to the 4.6iS and should not be substituted for the standard variants.
