Steering Column: Service and Repair
32 31 090 Removing and installing complete steering columnSpecial tools required:
^ 32 3 180
Important: After installation:
^ Carry out adjustment of steering angle sensor, refer to BMW Diagnosis Program.
^ Check for ease of movement in overall adjustment range of steering column to adjoining components/wires.
^ Turn steering wheel left and right to full lock. Airbag indicator lamp and EPS indicator lamp must not light up.
^ Interrogate fault memories.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Disconnect grounding cable from battery.
^ Remove trim panel for pedal assembly.
^ Remove air duct in footwell.
Move steering to straight-ahead position.
Lock steering column with special tool 32 3 180.
Important: The special tool 32 3 180 may only be removed again when the steering column has been connected to the steering gear!
Remove light switch centre.
Remove fixture for steering column stalk.
Release clamping screw (1).
Separate lower section of steering spindle from steering column and press downwards.
Installation:
Recut thread and replace clamping screw (1).
Tightening torque 32 31 lAZ.
Important:
During installation, make sure universal joint is correctly seated.
Lower section of steering spindle can only be joined in one position.
Disconnect plug connections from wiring harness (1) at steering column.
Remove wiring harness (1) completely from steering column.
Detach dashboard at lines (1) and (2).
Note: Section pulled out is no longer needed!
If necessary, remove cable for Interlock.
Installation: Lock (1) must snap into place.
For purposes of clarity, the steering column is shown without its surroundings!
Remove screws (1 and 2).
Remove steering column.
Installation:
Screws ( 1): M8 x 36
Screws (2): M8 x 70
Tightening torque, 32 31 6AZ.
Replacement only:
Important:
The replacement steering column is secured with a centering element. This centering element may only be removed when the new steering column has been fitted in the vehicle and connected to the steering gear.
Then insert hub centering element into removed steering column in place of special tool 32 3 180.
Analysis will be refused by the manufacturer if the centering element is omitted!Defective steering columns must be locked with the centering element without fail!
Modify lock cylinder.
Modify steering angle sensor.
Convert ignition starter switch.
Convert cable holder and cable duct.
Coding/programming
Observe following IDC specifications:
