23 00 023 Removing and installing transmission (G6S 37BZ/H-transmission)

Special tools required:
^ 00 1 45
^ 00 2 030
^ 212 221
^ 23 0 130
^ 230 131
^ 230 132
^ 230 134
^ 23 0 170

Important: After completion of work, check transmission oil level.

Use only the approved gear oil in this manual transmission; failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Disconnect battery, grounding strap on body
^ Remove heat shield, side right
^ Remove heat shield, middle
^ Remove and install reinforcement plate
Observe important notes on installation
^ Remove complete exhaust system

Release screws.
Tightening torque:

Preparing special tool 23 0 130:
Screw both special tools 23 0 134 onto special tools 23 0 131 and 23 0 132

Note: Pay attention to markings.

Support transmission with special tools 00 2 030 and 23 0 130

Unfasten screws and remove cross-member.

Remove propeller shaft from transmission and center bearing and tie to one side.

Important: Do not let propeller shaft fall into joints.

Joints and rubber sleeve on constant-velocity joint may be damaged.

Lower transmission.

Important: Relieve tension on clutch slave cylinder slowly when removing; otherwise air will be drawn in through sealing sleeve.

Release nuts and remove clutch slave cylinder.

Pressure pipe remains connected.

Tightening torque:
Slave cylinder to clutch housing or transmission case 22 Nm

Detach cable plug (1) from reverse gear switch. Release cable from retainers.

Remove spring (1 ) using a screwdriver from pin (3) towards rear. Press out pin (3) to left. Remove shift rod (2).

Detach locking clips (1). Pull shift rod (2 out of joint and remove shims (3).

Installation:
Grease selector rod. Grease: BMW Service Operating Fluids. Observe installation position of shims (3).

Pull out retainers (1) with bearing pin sideways.

Installation:
Grease bearing pin. Grease: BMW Service Operating Fluids.

Lift out shift arms (1).

Release screws, remove exhaust bracket from transmission.

Release screws, remove exhaust bracket from manifold.

Support engine at front with a hydraulic lifter.

Important: Do not allow transmission to hang on transmission input shaft when removing and installing, as the clutch disc will be deformed.

Release transmission bolts on engine.

Tightening torque:

Pull out transmission towards rear as far as possible, rotate approximately 10° counterclockwise and remove.

Installation:
Pay attention to adapter sleeves (1 and 2), replace if necessary. Ensure correct position of cover plate.

Installation:
Remove release unit and release lever, clean and apply grease to relevant points.

Installation:
Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. If grease is sticky, replace clutch plate.
Check clutch plate for friction rust in taper splines and replace if necessary.

Mechanically remove old grease and lining abrasion from the taper splines of the clutch disk (with a cloth).

Push special tool 21 2 221 onto splined shaft.
Then, to grease the taper splines, spread a thin uniform coating of grease over the entire area of the taper splines (1).

Also in taper groove and on guide pin (2).
Then remove special tool and install transmission.

Subsequent work on transmission: Secure transmission (1) with special tool 23 0 170 on assembly stand 00 1 450
