Subject
E46 with M56, and E60, E83, E85 with M54 - DME Fault Codes 2896, 2877, 2766

Complaint
Service Engine Soon is displayed in CD, or Check Engine Light is illuminated in the cluster. The following camshaft sensor related fault codes are stored in DME:
FC 2896 - Intake camshaft sensor, signal plausibility or
FC 2877 - Exhaust camshaft sensor, signal plausibility or
FC 2766 - Intake camshaft sensor, signal period

Cause
DME software error in cam sensor diagnostic program.
Sensor failure.

DME software error may possibly affect the following production range:
E46 SULEV with M56 up to 10/03
E60 with M54 up to 11/17/03
E83 X3 up to 11/01/03
E85 Z4 up to 12/17/03.

Measure
On a customer complaint basis only:

1. Perform DIS test module.

2. Transfer data through FASTA.

3. Replace affected camshaft sensor. For the intake side cam sensor, use PN 12 14 1 438 081. For the exhaust side use PN 12 14 1 438 082.

4. After sensor replacement, reprogram DME using:

for E46 SULEV - DIS CD 36.0, or higher,
for E60, E83, and E85 - CIP 10.0 or higher.

5. Clear fault memory, release vehicle.
