SUBJECT
* Exterior Mirrors Fail Sporadically

*MODEL
E46 (3 series) with option 459 (seat, mirror memory)

Vehicles produced March 2003 to November 2003

*SITUATION
Intermittently, the electric exterior mirrors cannot be moved or adjusted either from the door switch or the memory switch. The problem also affects the tilt in reverse function.

*CAUSE
After the processor in the mirror electronics is activated from standby mode, it begins to operate at the wrong clock pulse frequency.

Bus telegrams from the General Module 5 may not be interpreted correctly by the mirror electronics. The mirror electronics then switch off.

After the mirror electronics have entered standby mode (1 minute after the vehicle is locked), there is a reset and the system again works normally.

The mirror electronics are located directly in the mirror and the driver's side mirror has the master function.

If the mirror electronics on the driver's side is indicating that the fault is present, the passenger mirror is also no longer controlled. If the fault occurs on the passenger side, the driver's side will not be affected.

*CORRECTION
In case of customer complaint, replace both left and right side mirror drives (including the electronics).
