PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.
SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 03V-124: E46 SULEV DME Idle Control
MODEL
F46 M56; 325iA SULEV, 325CiA SULEV, 325iTA SULEV produced from 08/14/2002 up to 10/10/2002
SITUATION
BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety exist in certain 03 MY E46 SULEV vehicles.
The defect involves programming of the digital engine management control unit.
With the engine running, and the vehicle at rest, an increase of engine idle speed (up to 1,300 rpm) may be detected by the driver. If this occurs while the transmission is in gear (gear can only be selected with the vehicle's foot brake applied), the driver may feel as if the vehicle is being pushed
However, firm application of the vehicle's foot brake will still prevent vehicle motion.

This Service Action involves 325iA SULEV, 325CiA SULEV, and 325iTA SULEV vehicles with M56 engines which were produced from August 14th, 2002 up to October 10th, 2002.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Instrument cluster has to be connected again after programming completion, but prior to DME/EWS alignment.
Situation is caused by communication conflict between Kombi SW 31 and DME programming protocol KWP2000*. Vehicles equipped with the newer version of Kombi SW32 would not exhibit this type of behavior.
