Airbag Unit From 03/2002

Removing and Installing or Replacing Airbag Unit (plugged airbag unit)

Warning:
- Observe the following instructions to avoid any risk or injury by the airbag unit.
- Comply with safety regulations for handling components with gas generators.
- Do not exert any force on the airbag unit.
- Incorrect handling can activate airbag and cause injury.
- Disconnect battery negative pole and cover negative pole and terminal.


Important:
- Steering wheel must be replaced if airbag unit has been triggered!
- Follow procedure after airbag triggering

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery negative lead.

Installation






If a new airbag unit is installed, the grounding spring (1) still fitted must be removed from the steering wheel base plate!

Detach spring (1) from screw.

Grounding screw (1) can be safely omitted from new airbag units!







Insert a screwdriver through opening on rear side of steering wheel and press down on lock. If a springy resistance can be felt, press down lock as far as it will go and pull airbag unit (1) away from steering wheel.
Repeat procedure on opposite side.
For purposes of clarity, the procedure is shown in the next picture with the airbag unit already removed.






Using screwdriver (2), press down on lock (1).

Installation:






Make sure electrical leads are correctly positioned.

Insert airbag unit with hooks into locks and press into steering wheel.






Warning:
Airbag unit may only be put down with the impact pad facing upwards (luggage compartment).


Unlock airbag plug connection:
Lever out lock (1) with a screwdriver.






Open locks (1) and detach plugs
Remove airbag unit.

Installation:
Connect plugs to connections of same colour on airbag unit.
