Internal insulation failure of BREMI ignition coils may cause reduced ignition firing power, or ignition coils failure. The customer may complain of erratic engine performance and the "Service Engine Soon"
light illumination.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to check, and replace if necessary, ignition coils in all affected vehicles.

A copy of the customer notification letter is included.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 325i, 330i, 525i, 530i and X5 3.0i vehicles with M54/M56 engines produced from 09/02 up to 11/29/04. Also, 745i, 745Li, 760Li vehicles with N62/N73 engines and Z4 and X3 vehicles with M54 engines which were produced from series introduction up to 11/29/04.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the
system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
On the affected vehicles, check the manufacturer of the ignition coils. If BREMI coils are found, replace them with Bosch ignition coils.

PROCEDURE
Remove the ignition coil covers. For removal procedure refer to RA 12 13 511 (or RA 12 13 512 for N73 engine) found in BMW TIS.

Only coils manufactured by BREMI are affected.
BREMI coils are easily recognized by the all black, shiny housing.
Also, the brand name BREMI is molded on the rubber protective cover on top of the coil, under the connector plug.

Bosch coils, which can also be fitted in
the affected vehicles, are not affected and
should NOT be replaced. Bosch coils are easily recognized by the
all silver, aluminum housing. Also, the brand name Bosch is molded
on the rubber protective cover on top of the coil, under the connector plug.
