This Service Information bulletin supersedes Advance S.I. 65 11 02 dated December 2002.
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS OR BEFORE RETAIL SALE.

SUBJECT
[NEW] Service Action to Code DSP Amplifier
MODEL
[NEW] E39, E53 with DSP and DVD Navigation System.
[NEW] E39 vehicles produced September 2002, October 2002 and November 2002.
[NEW] E53 vehicles produced October 2002 and November 2002.
[NEW] SITUATION
Intermittently the DSP amplifier cuts off 2 minutes 40 seconds after starting the vehicle or after turning the ignition to "KL.R". The radio station continues to be displayed on the BM display and settings can be changed, but there is no sound.
The red "radio on" indicator remains illuminated. If the radio is switched "off" then "on" using the rotary push button, the sound is restored but cuts out again after 2 minutes 40 seconds.
[NEW] AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E39 (5 Series) vehicles which were produced from September 2002 up to November 2002 and E53 (X5 Series) vehicles which were produced from October 2002 up to November 2002.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
[NEW] CAUSE
A missing polling-signal between the DVD Navigation system and the DSP amplifier.
[NEW] CORRECTION
Recode the DSP amplifier with DIS CD V3 1.0 4th Update or higher. Do not replace any components, this will not fix the problem.
[NEW] PROCEDURE
Recode the DSP amplifier using DIS CD V3 1.0, 4th Update or higher.
1. Connect DIS Plus or GT1 tester to the vehicle
2. Turn ignition on
3. Select "Coding/Programming"
4. Select "3 ZCS/FA Coding"
5. Select "8 E53 Seriest1 or 6 E39 Series"
6. Select "1 Recoding"
7. Select "DSP"
8. Follow the onscreen instructions to end the process.
[NEW] LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action? has been assigned code number 347. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-205) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 347 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
