Removing and Installing Left Cylinder Head (N73)
11 12 105 - Removing and installing left cylinder head (N73)
Special tools required:
- 00 9 120 00 9 120 Torque Angle Measuring Dial
- 11 7 270 11 7 270 Pin Wrench
Cylinders 7 to 12.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Drain coolant Service and Repair.
- Drain engine oil Service and Repair.
- Remove left exhaust manifold Removing and Installing/Replacing Left Exhaust Manifold.
- Remove intake air manifold Service and Repair.
- Remove left cylinder head cover [1][2]Removing and Installing/Sealing Left Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove left timing case cover Removing and Installing Top Left Timing Case Cover (N73).
- Remove inlet and exhaust adjustment unit Removing and Installing/Replacing Inlet and Exhaust VANOS on Left Side (N73) on left side.
- Detach water hose (vent hose) from cylinder head.
Important!
Fit new cylinder head screws.
Do not wash off bolt coating.
There must be no oil in the blind holes (risk of cracking).
Remove screw connection (1) from Valvetronic drive with special tool 11 7 270 11 7 270 Pin Wrench.
Remove worm drive (2) in direction of arrow.
Adjust eccentric shaft to max. stroke and pretension tensioning spring (1) with a cable tie (2).
Feed tensioning spring (1) out from roller (3) and carefully relieve tension.
Reset eccentric shaft to minimum stroke.
Release screw connection on tensioning spring (1) and remove towards top.
Release screw connection on eccentric shaft sensor (2) and remove.
Installation:
Tightening torque:11 37 1AZ 11 37 Variable Valve Gear.
Detach guide rail from cylinder head.
Release screw for oil lines (1) and unclip from holders.
Release cylinder head bolts (2) on timing case cover.
Release cylinder head bolts (3) along line (4) from outside to inside.
Coat gap (1) between engine block and timing case cover with Drei Bond 1209 liquid sealant (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).
Check adapter sleeves (2) for damage and correct installation position, replace if necessary.
Installation:
All bores and blind holes must be free of oil and coolant. If necessary, blow clean with compressed air.
Install new cylinder head gasket Replacing Left Cylinder Head Gasket.
Put the cylinder head on.
Install cylinder head bolts with washers and initially tighten without play.
Tighten down cylinder head bolts with special tool 00 9 120 00 9 120 Torque Angle Measuring Dial in sequence 1 to 14.
Installation:
Tightening torque 11 12 8AZ 7AZ - 8AZ.
Note:
Shown without camshafts for purposes of clarity.
Insert and tighten down screws between cylinder head and timing case cover.
Installation:
Tightening torque, 11 14 1AZ 11 14 or 15 Case Covers.
Adjust valve timing 11 31 573 Adjusting Camshaft Timing on Left Side.
Install engine in reverse sequence to its removal.
Installation:
Coat all bearings and cams of camshafts with engine oil.
