Alternator: Service and Repair




12 31 020 - Removing and installing/replacing alternator (liquid-cooled N73)





Special tools required:
- 12 7 110 12 7 110 Socket Wrench Socket WAF 24





Warning!
Danger of scalding!

Only carry out work on cooling system after engine has cooled down.





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Follow instructions Instructions for Disconnecting and Connecting Battery for disconnecting and connecting battery.
- Disconnect battery negative lead Instructions for Disconnecting and Connecting Battery from battery and lay to one side.
- Remove complete left intake filter housing Service and Repair
- Remove radiator Service and Repair
- Remove alternator drive belt Replacing Alternator Drive Belt





Detach water hose (1) from water pump.

Note:
Illustrations show N62.





Detach water hose (1) from outer jacket for alternator.





Detach plug (1) from alternator.

Release nut (2).

Tightening torque: 12 31 1AZ [1][2]Specifications

Disconnect battery positive lead (3).





Caution!
Fully remove screw (1) at the end only.

Release screws on alternator.

Remove screw (1) half-way.

Pull out alternator a little and allow coolant to drain off.

Remove screw (1) completely.

Pull alternator completely out of outer jacket and removed towards top.





Installation:
Replace sealing ring (1).





Replace alternator pulley.

Release nut with special tool 12 7 110 12 7 110 Socket Wrench Socket WAF 24, gripping alternator shaft with hexagon socket screw wrench or multi-tooth socket wrench.

Tightening torque: 12 31 3AZ [1][2]Specifications.





Assemble engine.

Check for correct alternator operation.
