SUBJECT

MODEL
E65, E66 (7 Series)
Vehicles produced up to February 26, 2003
SITUATION
Air Bag warning light is illuminated, the following faults may be stored.
974A in SSFA (Seat satellite, driver), "Belt tensioner ignition pellet circuit resistance too high".
97CA in SSBF (Seat satellite, passenger), "Belt tensioner ignition pellet circuit resistance too high".
CAUSE
The seat belt tensioner is faulty.
PROCEDURE
In the event of a customer complaint, carry out the appropriate test module using DIS/GT1
If a belt tensioner is diagnosed as being faulty, both sides must always be replaced.
Always comply with safety precautions when handling safety belt tensioners as per Repair Manual RA32 34.......
1. Disconnect the battery before performing any repairs on the airbag system.
2. Remove both front seats as per Repair Manual RA 52 14 000. Position the seat in the most upwards position. This will help with the removal of the tensioner and brackets.
3. Remove the old style seat belt tensioner as per Repair Manual RA 72 11 041.
4. Remove the old style seat belt tensioner mounting bracket as per Repair Manual RA 52 14 010. This bracket is hold on by 4 mounting bolts, which will be replaced as part of the bracket set.
5. Transfer the mounting plate from the old tensioner bracket into the new tensioner bracket. If this plate is not installed the 2 rear mounting bolt threads may be damaged.
6. Install the new bracket onto the seat rail along with the new mounting bolts (included in bracket kit), (1) T40 and (2) T30, ensuring that the mounting plate is in the proper position under the 2 (1) retaining bolts. Torque to 10 Nm.
7. The new seat belt tensioner (2) can be identified with a wider ribbed boot and a shorter ignition cartridge compared to the old style (1) tensioner.
8. Install the new (2) seat belt tensioner onto the bracket with a new mounting bolt (PN 07 14 7 125 1 15). Torque to 24 Nm.
9. Perform this repair on both front seats.
10. Reinstall both front seats after the repair is complete.
11. Reconnect battery and dear fault memory.
12. Check operation of seat belts.
