SUBJECT
Navigation Computer is Inoperative at High Ambient Temperatures
MODEL
E65,L66 (7 Series), from start of production up to 04/2003
SITUATION
The customer may complain about the following issues at high ambient temperatures:
^ Navigation computer (NAV) is not working.
^ Loss of audio.
^ iDrive controller is not responsive. Control Display is blank.
In Addition:
^ FC "D7D2" (error_temp_shutdown) is stored in the fault memory of the navigation computer.
^ FC "9D8D2" (error_temp_shutdown) is stored in the audio system controller (ASK).
Please note:
The failure of a single MOST control unit will result in malfunctions in the entire MOST bus system.
CAUSE
There is an over-temperature protection function in the navigation computer. When the temperature in the navigation computer is too high, the navigation computer switches off the MOST bus to prevent damage.
The MOST bus remains inoperative as long as the temperature inside the navigation computer is above the cutout temperature.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only.
Perform diagnosis with DISplus or GT1.
If NAV overheat fault code "D7D2" is not stored in the navigation computer fault memory, please refer to Service Information B61 15 02 (MOST Bus Diagnosis).
If NAV overheat fault code "D7D2" is stored in the navigation computer fault memory, install two ventilation fans in the left side of the trunk.
PROCEDURE
1. In the trunk, remove the luggage compartment floor trim (refer to the Repair Instruction 51 47 101), the luggage compartment wheel arch trim left and right side (refer to Repair Instruction 51 47 151 and 51 47 161), the luggage compartment partition panel trim (refer to Repair Instruction 51 47 140) and also the right floor mat backing.
2. Remove the vehicle jack and the vehicle jack holder.
3. Disconnect the vehicle battery.
4. Remove the telematics control unit (TCU) or the telephone control unit (TBL) with its brackets. Refer to Repair Instruction 84 11 620.
5. Remove and dispose of the control unit cover above the electrical device carrier in the left side of the luggage compartment (if installed).
6. Remove all MOST control units from the left rear side of the trunk, including the electrical device carrier. Disassemble the electrical device carrier. Retain the carrier for the NAV control unit and dispose of all other parts. For Repair Instructions on each control unit, please refer to TIS (RA 65 90 511, removing and installing (replacing) navigation computer).
7. Remove and dispose of the trunk air ventilation flap on the left side.
8. Overview of the additional parts in the left side of the luggage compartment:
1) Axial fan
2) Bracket, front
3) Trunk air ventilation flap, rear left
4) Radial fan with filter
5) Bracket, rear
6) Control unit cover
9. Install the replacement trunk air ventilation flap (3) and cover the hole (1) at the lower edge of the trunk air ventilation duct with the trunk air ventilation flap seal (2).
10. Additional wiring harness for installing the ventilation fans:
1) Black 3-pin Connector X2915
2) Black 4-pin Connector X2914
3) Wire (brown) for connecting to X179
4) Relay holder X10597
5) Wire (red/yellow) for connecting to X1856
6) Black 5-pin Connector X4844
7) Ground splice
11. Mount the relay holder X10597 (1) to the electrical device carrier (2) on the right side of the luggage compartment and insert the relay.
12. Connect the brown wire to the ground connector (X1079) in the right side of the luggage compartment.
13. Disconnect the power module 32-pin connector X1856. Insert the red/yellow wire to pin 18 of the 32-pin connector X1856 of the power module. Reconnect the 32-pin connector to the power module.
14. If PIN 18 of the 32-pin connector X1856 is already used, cut the terminal from the end of the red/yellow wire (2) and connect it to the existing wire on PIN 18 using the supplied "Quick Connect" (1).connect the 32-pin connector to the power module.
15. Install the black 5-pin connector X4844 to the back of the fuse box in the right side of the luggage compartment, then insert the 5A fuse.
16. Route the wiring harness alongside the existing wiring harness (Right side of the luggage compartment, along the rear of the trunk, left side of the luggage compartment).
17. Install the heat insulation mat (1) to the left floor panel.
18. Mount the axial ventilation fan (1) to the intermediate bracket (2) for the axial ventilation fan. Black 3-pin connector (3) for power and ground.
19. Install the front bracket (2) in the left side of the luggage compartment using the existing mounting points. Do not install the nut for the upper mounting stud at this time. Mount the speech recognition module (SVS) to the bracket and tighten the retaining nut.
20. Position the bracket for the axial ventilation fan (1) on the upper mounting stud for the front bracket. Install and tighten the retaining nut.
The arrow on the fan must show in the direction of the airflow, pointing towards the control units
21. Connect the black 3-pin connector X2915 on the additional wiring harness to the 3-pin connector on the axial ventilation fan.
22. Mount the radial ventilation fan (1) to the intermediate bracket (2) for the radial ventilation fan, put the filter over the air intake on the radial fan and fasten it with a cable tie. Black 4-pin connector (3) with the integrated temperature sensor in the wire.
23. Install the rear bracket in the left side of the luggage compartment. Install and tighten the rear securing nuts for the SVS control unit. Reinstall the electrical carrier for the NAV control unit.
24. Install the assembled radial ventilation fan to the rear bracket. Position the radial ventilation fan outtake towards the trunk air ventilation flap.
25. Connect the black 4-pin connector X2914 on the additional wiring harness to the radial ventilation fan.
26. Reinstall the previously removed control units to the electrical device carrier.
27. Install the control unit cover above the electrical device carrier.
28. Reinstall the TCU or the TEL. Refer to Repair Instruction RA 84 11 620, removing and installing (replacing) the transmit-receive unit.
29. Reinstall all removed trim parts, the vehicle jack and the vehicle jack holder.
30. Reconnect the vehicle battery.
