This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B11 05 03 dated August 2003.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, centers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that centers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 03V [NEW] 324: Retorque of Oil Drain Plug Located on Oil Filter Cover

MODEL
745i, 745Li, and 760Li produced from 5/20/2003 through 7/18/2003

SITUATION
Some E65/E66 vehicles produced between 5/20/2003 and 7/18/2003 may have an insufficiently torqued oil drain plug. This Allen Head plug is located within the hex nut of the oil filter cover. A loosening of the plug could initially lead to an oil leak. If left unattended, a subsequent loss of oil would cause the illumination of the oil pressure light and a warning message in the instrument cluster. If a large amount of oil loss occurs, engine damage may result.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Safety Recall to check and retorque the oil drain plug. Copies of the notification letter and a Q & A are included in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This recall involves E65 and E66 vehicles with the N62 and N73 engines which were produced from 5/20/2003 through 7/18/2003.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Tighten the Allen Head screw, located within the oil filter cover hex nut, to the correct torque.

PROCEDURE

Raise vehicle on hoist. Utilizing an appropriate torque wrench, retorque the 6 mm Allen Head screw (shown as "1" in illustration) to 10 Nm. Clean any residual oil from the surface of the oil pan and ensure that there is no further leakage.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This recall has been assigned code number 368. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-215) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 368 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
