Elastokinematic Multi Link Rear Suspension

Elastokinematic Multi Link Rear Suspension

The introduction of the E31 brought with it true elastokinematic suspension technology. Elastokinematics is a name for a type of suspension system that is designed to be pliable (like elastic) which absorbs the longitudinal and axial forces of driving providing unsurpassed handling characteristics.

The Multilink Elastokinematic systems are equipped on the following vehicles:
- E31/E38/E39 - all models

The E31 uses a 5 link system while the E38 and E39 use 4 link systems. The principals are the same, but the 4 link system is simpler in design and requires less space.

The multilink suspension is made of the following components (example is an E38 rear suspension).

The multiple links connect to the subframe by rubber bushings. The subframe is connected to the body shell by large rubber bushings as well. The system isolates road and wheel vibration very well.

The elastokinematic action of the system is provided by calculated movement as a result of driving forces. The movement provides slight changes in the suspension geometry that assists the handling characteristics.

The example below demonstrates the systems ability to absorb braking forces allowing for smoother stops without transferring the energy to the body.
