Connecting Rod: Description and Operation
PISTONS/CONNECTING RODS
The pistons on the M62 engine are the same design as the M60 but are now "Iron Coated" for use with the Alusil block. The pistons have a flat crown surface and are marked with the engine designation / displacement / compression and arrow for direction of installation.
The piston rings remain the same configuration as the M60. See illustration.
The connecting rods on the M62 engine are the same sintered type rods as used on the M60.
The rods are forged as one piece and then the cap is split from the main part of the rod.
This forms an irregular mating surface that eliminates the need for centering sleeves and actually increases the strength of the rod when it is installed.
All of the rods are of one weight class and conform to the double bearing classification, red or blue.
