Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair
Replacing Pulse Generator (M62)
Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
Switch off ignition.
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Release screw.
Remove pulse generator.
Installation Note:
Observe the following when replacing the transmission, the flywheel or the pulse sensor:
If one or more spacers are fitted between the transmission housing and the pulse generator, the distance between the pulse generator and the pulse teeth of the incremental gear must be measured.
Rotate the crankshaft at the front central bolt so that a full pulse tooth (1) can be seen through the opening in the removed pulse generator. Make sure that the pulse tooth (1) is exactly centered in the hole.
Use special tool 00 2 407 or 00 2 550 to determine depth to flywheel pulse gears.
Note down depth.
Measure depth (A) of pulse generator.
Subtract depth (A) of pulse generator from depth of flywheel.
This result is the gap dimension.
Use the spacers to adjust a gap of 0.55 ± 0.2 mm.
The measurement of 0.55 mm should be adjusted as precisely as possible so as to:
1. enable precise misfiring detection
2. prevent the pulse generator from coming into contact with the pulse teeth.
Spacers, refer to BMW Parts Service.
NOTE:
Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
Check stored fault messages.
Rectify faults.
Now clear the fault memory.
