Exhaust System: Service and Repair
Removing and installing complete exhaust system
Remove rear splash guard.
Remove panel for bumper at rear.
Warning: Scalding hazard!
These tasks should only be carried out on an exhaust system that has cooled down!
Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.
Note: Weight of exhaust system is approximately 50 kg.
Mark left and right plug connections (1 and 2) to avoid mixing up plugs.
Unclip left and right plug connections (1 and 2) from holders and disconnect.
Unclip cables from cable holders (3).
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Unclip cable (2) from cable holders (3).
Remove heat shield (1).
Detach connection carrier on catalytic converters from body.
Unscrew catalytic converter on left and right from exhaust manifolds.
Note: The connections between exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters are only fitted with sealing rings on the inner tubes.
1. With sealing ring (outer)
2. Without sealing ring (inner)
Installation:
Check sealing rings, replace if necessary.
Replace self-locking nuts.
Coat threads with copper paste.
Release screw connection (1) on both exhaust pipes.
Remove pipe clamps (2).
Release nuts on rear muffler on left and right.
Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Removal of exhaust system must be carried out with assistance of a second person.
Release screws and remove complete exhaust system.
Note: Connection carrier (1) is connected to exhaust system via rubber mounts and must not be removed.
