CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR







The engine speed (RPM) and crankshaft position input signals are provided by the inductive pulse sensor that scans the incremental gear wheel mounted on the flywheel of the engine. Operation of this sensor is the same as other M5.x systems. The rotation of the gear wheel generates an A/C voltage signal in the sensor where-by each tooth of the wheel produces one pulse. The engine control module counts these pulses and determines engine speed and crankshaft position.

The signal from the crankshaft sensor is also used for OBD II monitoring for mis-fire detection.
