Suspension: Service and Repair


Removing and installing complete front axle (with spring strut shock absorber)

Caution:
After installation, bleed power steering.

Unscrew and remove splash guard.

Remove left and right brake calipers and tie back to body - lines remain connected.

Disconnect ABS pulse generator lead in plug box.

Suspend engine in installation position with special tool.
Described in: Remove oil sump.

Release screw connection (nut) on engine mount on left and right from above.





Lock steering wheel in straight-ahead drive position.

Remove bolt and separate universal joint from steering gear.

Installation:
Markings on steering gear must line up. Clamping screw must be located in groove of steering shaft.

Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Draw off hydraulic fluid for power steering from tank - do not re-use.





Unfasten lines on steering gear and seal bore.

Installation:
Replace sealing rings (D).

Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.





Unfasten left and right screw.





Release screws on panel (1).





Withdraw pin (1). Pull out expansion rivet (2) and remove panel.





Release holder for hydraulic lines.





Release holder for hydraulic lines.

Unclip all lines on front axle support.

Detach plug from ride level sensor.

Warning:
Release screw connection of front axle support from vehicle side - there must be no personnel situated under the front axle!
Risk of injury!






Support front-axle carrier with trolley jack. Unfasten left and right screw.

Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.





Unscrew left and right bolts.

Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.





Unscrew left and right nuts.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.

Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.

Caution: Spring strut shock absorbers must not tilt or hang outwards - damage to ball joints and wheel bearings.

Lower car jack; each spring strut must be held by an individual person during this procedure.
