SUBJECT
TCU Missing from Vehicle, but not Included in Service Action
MODEL
E46 (3 Series), E83 (X3): 2004 Model Year vehicles produced from 09/2003
SITUATION
Because of a parts shortage, some vehicles equipped with either the optional Premium Package (ZPP) or BMW Assist (SA639), have been be shipped to BMW centers without the Telematics Control Unit (TCU). Without the TCU, calls to BMW Assist or "SOS" calls cannot be completed.
We have found that certain vehicles are missing the TCU, but the VIN falls outside the range of vehicles in the technical campaign B84 19 03 (Service Action: Install TCU) Follow the procedure below to install a TCU and activate BMW Assist on the vehicle.
CORRECTION
Install TCU
PROCEDURE
1. Access the TCU location in the left luggage compartment by removing the trim. On convertibles, the TCU location is on the left rear bulkhead, accessed via the trunk.
[NEW]2. Before installing the new TCU, remove from it one copy of the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) label and place a copy on the repair order for reference during warranty claim entry. You will be asked for the new TCU "ESN" when submitting a claim in DCS net.
[NEW]3. If a second FSN label is available on the new TCU, affix it over the existing label on the Owner's Manual insert (P/N 01 49 0 157 963).
4. Install the new TCU and code it with DIS CD36.1 or higher (E46) or CIP 10.1 or higher (E83).
5. Remove the temporary label over the SOS button (as necessary), and reinstall any removed vehicle trim.
6. NOTE:
In order that the TCU replacement is properly recorded, FASTA must be activated in the DISPlus/GT1. For details on activating FASTA, refer to SI B07 07 01.
Using DISPlus/GT1, select "Diagnosis" and delete any stored fault codes.
7. Test the BMW Assist service for proper operation by placing a test call using the SOS button.

The MEL button on the steering wheel must not be used.
