- Do not damage paint.

NOTE: For purposes of clarity, D-pillar panel is shown removed.

To replace side buffers, release lock nut (1) of adjustable buffer.
Release nut (2) of guide of adjustable buffer; in so doing, grip guide of adjustable buffer in water drain.
Remove complete buffer.

Installation:
Tightening torque of lock nut (1) of adjustable buffer,
4AZ Lock nut of adjustable buffer

M12x1 15 Nm

Structure of side buffers:
1. Adjustable buffer
2. O-ring of adjustable buffer
3. Guide of adjustable buffer (screw-mounted in body)
4. O-ring of guide of adjustable buffer
5. Nut of guide of adjustable buffer
6. Lock nut of adjustable buffer

Installation:
During installation, make sure the CD-ring of the guide of the adjustable buffer and the O-ring of the adjustable buffer are fitted and not damaged.
Water could otherwise leak into the passenger compartment!

Screw in side buffers fully.
For this purpose, unlock cover in D-pillar panel by turning through 90° and then lift out.

Check sliding surfaces on rear lid lock for damage, replace lock if necessary.

NOTE: For purposes of clarity, trim for tail panel shown removed.

Emergency unlocking of rear lid:
In the trim for the tail panel, a cover is located in the area of the aperture for the striker.
The emergency unlocking lever (1) is visible when the cover has been removed.
Emergency unlocking of the rear lid is effected when the lever is moved.

Check striker (1) in rear lid, replace if necessary.
Unclip cover (2).

Slacken screws of striker so that it can be moved and can center itself.

CAUTION: Striker must not brush against rear lid lock.

NOTE: The threaded plate for the striker retaining screws is loosely fitted and can fall out once the two striker retaining screws have been released!

When replacing striker, always leave one of the retaining screws (2) in threaded plate.
Threaded plate (1) is only held in place by striker retaining screws (2)!

Protect trunk lid to prevent it from dropping, then remove gas pressure prop.

- Adjustment of trunk lid:

CAUTION:
- Before closing the trunk lid and when closing the trunk lid, ensure that the body and/or trunk lid are not damaged.
- Striker must not brush against rear lid lock
.

NOTE:
- If the vertical adjustment of the rear lid is altered, it is absolutely essential to adjust the rear window as well.
- The position of the rear lid and rear window hinge shafts to each other changes when the vertical adjustment is corrected and the rear window may be subjected to tension when it is closed!
- This will result in poor closing and opening comfort.

Height adjustment:
Close trunk lid carefully.
Slacken screw of hinge bracket for rear lid on rear lid hinge on left and right so that rear lid can be moved.
Vertical adjustment is conducted at middle of elongated hole.
Measurement (A) = uniform distance.
Measurement (B) = uniform distance.

NOTE: For purposes of clarity, screw is shown removed.

Tighten screw back down.
2AZ Rear lid hinge bracket to rear lid hinge
M8x13 10.9 20 Nm

Gap adjustment and longitudinal adjustment:
Rear lid closed.
Slacken screws of hinge bracket for rear lid on rear lid on left and right so that rear lid can be moved.

Adjust gap dimensions and position of rear lid relative to the other attachments on the body.
Tighten down screws of hinge bracket again.
1AZ Rear lid to rear lid hinge bracket
M8x18 10.9 20 Nm

Correct gap dimension of rear lid by moving striker.
Tighten down screws of striker again.

CAUTION: Striker must not brush against rear lid lock.

Adjustment of rear window:
Prerequisite:
Trunk lid is correctly adjusted.
Close trunk lid and open rear window.
Slacken screw of hinge bracket for rear window (1) on rear window hinge on left and right so that hinge bracket can still be moved.
Using special tool 41 6 250 (adjustment aid), align shaft of hinge bracket of rear window (2) parallel to shaft of hinge bracket of rear lid (3).
If the hinge shafts for the rear lid and window are not parallel, the rear window may be subjected to tension when closed!
This will result in poor closing and opening comfort.
Tighten screws down again.
5AZ Rear window hinge bracket to rear window hinge
M8x1x13 10.9 30 Nm

Height adjustment:
For vertical adjustment of rear window, fit or remove shims between hinge bracket (1) and rear window (2).

Installation:
As the basic setting, shims 3 mm high must befitted.
Max. 3 shims are permitted.

To install shims for vertical adjustment of rear window, slacken retaining screws for rear window hinge bracket and insert shims between rear window and hinge bracket.
Tighten screws down again.
6AZ Rear window to rear window hinge bracket
M8x16 8.8 16 Nm

Gap adjustment and length adjustment:
Slacken screws of hinge bracket for rear window on rear window on left and right so that hinge bracket can be moved.

CAUTION: Before and during closing of rear lid, ensure body and/or rear lid are not damaged.

Close rear window carefully.

Gap adjustment and longitudinal adjustment:
Adjust gap dimensions and position of rear window relative to the other attachments on the body.

Open rear window; do not alter setting in so doing.
Tighten down screws again for rear window hinge bracket on rear window on left and right.
6AZ Rear window to rear window hinge bracket

Close rear window and check setting; repeat if necessary.

Tighten down screws of rear window lock again.
Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 61 62 8AZ.
8AZ Wiper motor to rear lid 10 Nm

CAUTION:
- After adjusting the rear window, you must always check
- the position of the wiper shaft relative to the drive disk and
- the end stop of the rear window wiper motor; adjust if necessary
.

Adjustment of striker (1) of rear window: Lock nut (2).

Adjusting procedures:

NOTE: Striker is only vertically adjustable:

Close rear window.
Measure height of rear window relative to other body parts.
Compare actual and specified values of rear window to other rear window attachments and adapt if necessary.

To vertically adjust rear window, slacken lock nut (2) and turn striker (1).
Tighten lock nut again.

- Adjustment of side buffers:
Adjustable buffers are adjusted from passenger compartment.
Close trunk lid.

NOTE: For purposes of clarity, D-pillar panel is shown removed.

If necessary, release lock nut (1) of adjustable buffer.

Use Allen key to bring adjustable buffer (2) into contact with rear lid and then pretension by 1.0 turns.
Tighten down lock nut of adjustable buffer again.
Tightening torque of lock nut (1) of adjustable buffer,
4AZ Lock nut of adjustable buffer
M8 15 Nm

Tightening torque of nut (2) of guide of adjustable buffer,
3AZ Nut of guide of adjustable buffer
M12x1 15 Nm

NOTE:
- If the pretension results in poor rear lid closing comfort, the pretension can be turned back to 0.5 turns.
- However, in this case, ensure the rear lid does not cause any noises when the engine is idling (particular attention paid to diesel models).

Install rear spoiler.
Check height of rear spoiler to roof outer skin and adjust joint and gap dimensions.

NOTE:
- If height of rear spoiler deviates from specified dimensions, measure and note down dimension.
- Correct rear lid by measured deviation, i.e. alter vertical adjustment of rear lid.
- If the vertical adjustment of the rear lid is altered, it is absolutely essential to adjust the rear window as well.
- The position of the rear lid and rear window hinge shafts to each other changes and the rear window may be subjected to tension when it is closed!
