31 12 046 Replacing Bracket For Left or Right Control Arm (4WD)

Caution!
If a bracket is replaced, the rubber mount on the other must also be replaced.
Remove underbody protection at rear and middle.
If necessary, remove right heat shield.
Unfasten screws.
Installation:
Control arm to front axle support
(4WD) 59 Nm
Note: Replace Screws.
Unfasten screws.
Installation:
Ball Joint for control arm to front axle carrier
(4WD) 80 Nm
Punch-mark center of control arm.
Composite parts of special tool 00 7 500.
Detach bracket with special tool 00 7 500 / 31 2 151 from control arm.
Caution!
Never re-use a rubber mount pulled off from control arm. Rubber-coated inner sleeve is destroyed if pulled off dry.
Replace rubber mount.
Coat control arm pin and rubber mount bush with approved antiseize agent.
Note: The brackets are marked as follows:
L left bracket
R right bracket
The larger diameters of the bores point to the front axle support.
Attach special tool 31 2 153 in first control arm bore.
Note: If necessary, use extensions of threaded rods.
Install new bracket/rubber mount on control arm with special tools 00 7 500 and 31 2 152/154.
Install bracket/rubber mount up to measurement (A).
Load must be removed from rubber mount during measurement-slacken special tool.
A=170 ±1 mm below at control arm from rubber mount to edge of bore in control arm.
Caution!
Bolt bracket and control arm to front axle support immediately.
Leave car for min. 30 minutes in empty weight position and avoid major spring deflections.
After approx. 30 minutes, the antiseize agent is fully evaporated and the control arm is firmly seated and correctly positioned in the rubber mount.
Non-conformance with these procedures could lead to serious impairment of handling!
