SUBJECT
Headlight Wiring Deteriorated
MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series)
E92 (3 Series)
Only affects vehicles equipped with option SA 522 (Xenon headlights)
SITUATION
When a bulb replacement becomes necessary for one of the bulbs located in the xenon headlight assembly, the technician notices that the insulation on the wiring has deteriorated.
CAUSE
Environmental conditions, such as heat, humidity and high ozone levels, can cause the wiring insulation to deteriorate. The service inspection cover on the back of the headlight assembly may not be secured properly, allowing humidity to enter the headlight assembly.
PROCEDURE
Inspect the wiring for the headlight assembly being serviced.
If the headlight assembly wiring has deteriorated, replace the affected headlight assembly as per ISTA repair instructions.
Ensure that the inspection cover is secure for both headlight assemblies as per ISTA Repair Manual "REP 6399... Notes for replacing the protective Cap of the headlight".
