SUBJECT
Erroneous Flat Tire Monitor Warning

MODEL
[NEW] E60 (5 Series) and E61 (5 Series Sports Wagon) produced up to 9/05.

SITUATION
Flat Tire Monitor (FTM) warning is illuminated even though there is no loss of air pressure. No fault stored in memory.

CAUSE

1. Run Flat Indicator (RPA) warning threshold is too low.

2. E61 vehicles only: Communication fault between RPA and Electronic Height Control (EHC).

CORRECTION
In case of a customer complaint, perform individual coding on DSC Control Module.

PROCEDURE

1. Check the tire pressures against the specified values located on the label in the driver's doorjamb or inside the Owner's Manual. The tire pressure must be checked only at a cool tire condition in ambient temperature.

2. Initialize the FTM via iDrive per the instructions provided in the Owner's Manual.

3. [NEW] If the tire pressures have been set correctly, and there is no evidence of incorrect initialization procedure, perform individual coding with CIP 19.0 or higher on DSC Control Module only. Do not code the entire vehicle.

Notes

1. The vehicle must have the same CIP level before individual coding can be performed.

2. The FTM warning can be illuminated when FTM is not initialized after a tire replacement.

3. Diagnosis requests contain the last initialization and the last warning information.

4. Refer to Service Technology Bulletin (SBT) 36 01 04 078 for more information about RPA system.
