March 9, 2005
Subject
Erroneous Flat Tire Monitor (FTM) Warning
Affected Vehicles
E60 (5 Series) produced from 3/04 up to 11/04.
Complaint
FTM warning is illuminated even though there is no loss of air pressure. There is no fault stored in the memory.
Cause
Run Flat Indicator (RPA) warning threshold is too low.
Measure
In case of a customer complaint:
1) Check the tire pressures against the specified values located on the label in the driver's doorjamb or inside the Owner's Manual. The tire pressure must be checked only at a cool tire condition in ambient temperature.
2) Initialize the FTM via iDrive per the instructions provided in the Owner's Manual.
3) If the tire pressures have been set correctly, and there is no evidence of incorrect initialization procedure, reprogram the vehicle with CIP 15.2 or higher.
Notes
1) The FTM warning can also be illuminated after a tire replacement without a proper FTM initialization.
2) Diagnosis requests contain the last initialization and the last warning information.
3) Refer to Service Technology Bulletin (SBT) 36 01 04 078 for more information about RPA system.
