Removing and Installing Automatic Transmission (6HP19Z)




24 00 030 - Removing and installing automatic transmission (6HP19Z)





Special tools required:
- 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit
- 24 1 110 24 1 110 Socket with Magnet
- 24 2 390 24 2 390 Covering Cap
- 24 4 160 24 4 160 Support Bracket
- 24 4 161 24 4 160 Support Bracket
- 24 4 163 24 4 160 Support Bracket
- 24 4 164 24 4 160 Support Bracket
- 24 5 301 24 5 300 Supports
- 24 5 306 24 5 300 Supports





Important!
After completion of work, check transmission oil level Checking/Topping Up Fluid Level in Automatic Transmission (GA6HP19Z).

Use only the approved transmission fluid.

Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery Instructions for Disconnecting and Connecting Battery.
- Remove underbody protection at front and rear.
- Remove reinforcement plate Service and Repair.
Important notes on installation are described in this work step.
- Remove complete exhaust system Service and Repair.





Remove heat shields (1) and (2).





Grip clamping sleeve (1).

Slacken nut (2).

Detach retainer (3) towards bottom using a screwdriver.

Pull cable (4) out of holder.

Installation Note:
Adjust selector lever Adjustments





Supporting transmission:

Support with special tools 24 5 306 24 5 300 Supports, 24 5 301 24 5 300 Supports and 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit.

Set up special tool 24 5 306 24 5 300 Supports:

- All supports to "A".
- Supports 3 and 4 are at rear of transmission.
- Support lettering points forwards.





Release screws (1) and nuts (2).

Remove transmission cross-member.

Tightening torque 23 71 2AZ/5AZ 24 71 Transmission Mounts.





- Remove propeller shaft from transmission.
- Release center bearing.
- Tie propeller shaft to one side.
Tasks are described in Removing propeller shaft Removing and Installing Complete Propeller Shaft (Constant-Velocity Joint).





- Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning.
- Release cable from retainers.
- Insert special tool 24 2 390 24 2 390 Covering Cap in sealing sleeve.
These tasks are described in Notes on mechatronics.

(Important: Observe important note)





Unscrew bolt (1).

Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.

Installation Note:
Replace sealing rings.





Release screw (1).

Note:
Illustration shows E60 manual transmission.





Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw is visible in opening.

Release all screws of torque converter with special tool 24 1 110 24 1 110 Socket with Magnet.

Crank engine further and release remaining 2 screws.

Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ [1][2]Specifications.





Prepare special tool (1) 24 4 161 24 4 160 Support Bracket with shaped piece (2) 24 4 164 24 4 160 Support Bracket.

Shaped piece (3) 24 4 163 24 4 160 Support Bracket is not required.





Insert special tool 24 4 160 24 4 160 Support Bracket into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1).

Twist in screw (2) and clamp down.

Then tighten down screw (1).





Unfasten screws.

Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ Transmission in General.





Installation Note:
Bore (1) in driving disk must be accessible from opening on engine oil pan.





Check that dowel sleeves are correctly seated.

Replace damaged dowel sleeves.





Installation Note:
Rotate torque converter until bore in torque converter is flush with bore in driving disk.

Flange automatic transmission to engine.
