Removing and Installing Complete Front Axle (With Spring Strut Shock Absorber)

31 10 000 Removing and installing complete front axle (with spring strut shock absorber)

Special tools required:
^ 00 2 030
^ 00 2 040
^ 314 011
^ 314 012

Note: After installation, bleed power steering.

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations. Draw off hydraulic power steering fluid from reservoir - do not reuse.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Secure engine in installation position.
^ Remove stabilizer link on spring strut.
^ Remove brake calipers on left and right - lines remain connected - and tie back to body.
^ Unscrew and remove splash guard.
^ Remove reinforcement plate.
^ Remove lower section of steering spindle from steering gear.
^ Disconnect ADS pulse generator line. Disconnect line from ride level sensor.





Vehicles with DYNAMIC DRIVE:
Release union nuts (1) and (2).
Tightening torque (1): ---->
Banjo bolt M10 12 Nm
Banjo bolt M14 33 Nm
Banjo bolt M16 39 Nm
Banjo bolt M18 45 Nm
Union screw M54 36 Nm

Tightening torque (2):Connecting Nuts 30 Nm.





Vehicles with AFS:
Unlock plug connections (1) and (2) and disconnect.
Unclip wiring harness from body.





Vehicles without DYNAMIC DRIVE: Detach pressure line for power steering at vane pump and seal off connection.
Installation:
Replace sealing rings (D).
Tightening torque.

Hydraulic line connections to vane pump/power steering pump and steering pump and steering gear/banjo bolts, steering hydraulics
Banjo bolt M10 12 Nm
Banjo bolt M14 33 Nm
Banjo bolt M16 39 Nm
Banjo bolt M18 45 Nm
Union screw M54 36 Nm








Vehicles with DYNAMIC DRIVE: Disconnect pressure line for power steering from pump and seal off connection.







Open fast-release coupling (1. Vehicles with DYNAMIC DRIVE: Release union nut (2). Tightening torque: Expansion Hose 30 Nm.
Detach spring struts on left and right from wheel arch.

Important: Spring strut shock absorbers must not tilt or hang outwards - damage to ball joints and wheel bearings.





Support front axle support with garage jack 00 2 030/00 2 040 and special tool 314 011/314 012.





Insert special tool 314 012 in rear openings in front axle support.





Insert special tool 314 011 in front bores in front axle support.





Remove front axle support from engine support on left and right. Lower workshop hoist.
Installation: Tighten down both front screws (1) first.

Tightening torque: (E60)
Check for damaged threads.

M12 10.9 Replace screws 100 Nm.
M10 9.8 Replace Screws 47 Nm.
M10 8.8 Replace Screws 42 Nm.
M12 8.8 Replace Screws 77 Nm.
M12 12.9 Replace Screws 105 Nm.
M12 10.9 Replace Screws 110 Nm.
