Replacing Front Spring Strut Shock Absorber
31 31 031 Replacing front left or right spring strut shock absorberSpecial tools required:

Note:
^ Check spring strut (when installed) with Boge shock tester (limit values) and (when removed) with shock absorber test machine
^ Read and comply with Service Information on shock absorber replacement
After installation:
^ Perform chassis alignment check
^ Carry out adjustment of steering angle sensor
Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Remove front spring strut
Warning! You will be exposed to a high risk of injury if you fail to comply with the following points!
- Follow instructions for using the spring tensioner.
- Use only specified special tools.
- Do not use a protective insert for special tool 31 3 354.
Clamp special tool 31 3 341 at guide (1) in vice.
Position spring retainer 31 3 355 with protective insert 31 3 365 and spring retainer 31 3 354 without protective insert from above on special tool 31 3 341 until locking pin (2) can be felt and hear to snap into place.
Important! It is absolutely essential to use special tool 31 3 354 without the protective insert!
Check secure seating of special tools 31 3 354 and 31 3 355, correct if necessary.
Clean coil spring to remove heavy contamination.
Insert upper spring plate in special tool 31 3 354.
Place lower coil of coil spring in special tool 31 3 355.
Twist spring strut until end of coil spring is flush with end of special tool 31 3 355.
Note: In this way, the coil spring rests to optimum effect on special tools 31 3 354 and 31 3 355.
Tension coil spring.
Installation:
Coil spring must fit positively in lower spring plate/spring pad.
Make sure that end of coil spring (1) is in correct position in relation to spring pad (2).
Remove cap.
Release nut with special tool 31 2 210; if necessary, grip piston rod at hexagon socket.
Remove support bearing with shim.
Remove spring strut from coil spring
Installation:
Tightening torque; Shock absorber piston rod on thrust bearing 54 Nm
Replace self-locking nut.
Check support bearing, replace if necessary.
Relieve tension on coil spring and remove from special tools 31 3 354 and 31 3 355.
Remove spring plate with spring pad.
Installation:
End of coil spring must be flush with end of special tool 31 3 355.
Check spring plate and spring pad, replace if necessary.
Remove auxiliary spring (1), gaiter (2) and spring pad (3).
Installation:
Check auxiliary spring (1), gaiter (2) and spring pad (3), replace if necessary.
If necessary, replace coil spring.
