A/C - Water Droplets From Right Side Center Vents

SUBJECT
Water Droplets Blown from Right Side Center Vents with A/C On

MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series) All-Wheel Drive vehicles only with Automatic Transmission

SITUATION
The customer states that with the air conditioning system on and the blower motor set to mid to high speed, water droplets may be blown from the right side center vents. No water is seen coming from the right side evaporator drain under the vehicle.

CAUSE
The transmission shifter cable makes contact with the right side (passenger) evaporator drain. The drain hose flap does not close, allowing air to be drawn back in through the hose and into the blower housing and out the center vents.

PROCEDURE

On a customer complaint basis only, perform the following procedure:

1. Remove the lower under body panel located directly under the transmission.

2. Inspect the drain hose and the shifter cable located on the right hand side of the transmission.

3. Check that the passenger's side drain hose (1) does not make contact with the automatic transmission shifter cable (3). If contact is made the drain hose flap (2) will not close properly on higher blower speeds, causing water to be drawn back through the hose and out the center vents.

4. Using a cable tie (2) secured to the transmission housing eyelet, move the shifter cable away from the drain hose flap (1).

5. Check the operation of the drain hose on high blower speed. Water should eventually drain from both hoses (water pulses out drains).
