Correction

The repair consists of inspecting the motor position cover of the power steering gear and if necessary, replacing the cover. In rare cases, it is possible that the wiring harness for the steering gear may be corroded. If the wiring harness is corroded, it must be replaced. Please follow the procedure listed below to determine the necessary corrective action.

PROCEDURE

A) Inspecting Motor Position Cover:

1. Switch off the ignition.

2. Remove the underbody protection. Refer to Repair Instructions 51 47 490 "Removing and installing/replacing front underbody protection" and 51 47 491 "Removing and installing/replacing rear underbody protection".

3. The motor cover can be viewed from the left side of the vehicle. Check the motor cover.

4. If the motor cover has a casting point on the connector housing as indicated by the arrow in the diagram, no further action is necessary. Reinstall the underbody protection.

5. If there is no casting point on the connector housing, the cover must be replaced and the wiring connection must be inspected. Proceed to Section B listed below.

B) Replacing the cover and inspecting wiring connection:

1. If necessary, clean the cover and the surrounding area with brake cleaner. Carefully remove any residue from the area with a clean dry lint free cloth. Disconnect connector X13772 at the motor cover.

2. Remove the bolts holding the cover in place. Ensure the stepper motor is protected from dirt before removing the cover. Remove the cover.

3. With the cover removed, examine the pin connections. If there is corrosion on the pin contacts, the AFS wiring harness must be replaced.

4. Replace the radial seal for the cover. The mounting surface for the cover must be clean and free of any grease or oil.

5. Fit the new cover in place and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts by hand until the cover is mounted flush to the motor. Please do not over tighten the bolts.

6. Loosen the cover bolts by one turn.

7. Tighten the bolts to 0.6 Nm using special tool 00 9 250 with flexible extension 00 9 251 and a T6 Torx head socket. The flexible extension should be kept as straight as possible to ensure the proper torque is applied.

Note:
If the AFS wiring harness must be replaced, proceed to Section C "Replacing AFS wiring harness" listed below. Otherwise proceed to step 8.

8. Reinstall the underbody protection.

9. Connect the DIS or GT-1 to the vehicle's diagnostic connector.

10. Initialize and calibrate the Active Front Steering. Refer to Repair Instruction 32 10 005 "Start up/adjustment for active front steering".

C) Replacing the AFS wiring Harness

1. Disconnect the battery.

2. Lower the front axle carrier. Refer to Repair Instruction 31 11 506 "Lower the front axle carrier".

3. Remove the wheel arch trim at the bottom right.

4. Remove the bracket for the left engine mount.

5. Remove the bolts for the steering gear at the front axle carrier.

6. Replace the wiring harness section for the active steering.

7. Reinstall the underbody protection.

8. Connect the DIS or GT-1 to the vehicle's diagnostic connector.

9. Initialize and calibrate the Active Front Steering. Refer to Repair Instruction 32 10 005 "Start up/adjustment for active front steering"
