SUBJECT
Service Action: Minimum Valve Lift Adjustment
MODEL
E60 5 Series with the N62 Engine produced from 7/10/2003 to 10/14/2003
SITUATION
On certain vehicles noted above, the minimum valve lift may have been incorrectly set to 0.8 mm at the factory. If left at this setting, the customer may experience loss of engine performance and throttle response during spirited driving.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E60 5 series vehicles with the N62 engine which were produced from 7/10/2003 to 10/14/2003.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

PROCEDURE
Warm up the engine. Connect the diagnostic system. Select the following diagnostic path.
^ Complete vehicle
^ Drive
^ Engine management ME9
^ Valve gear
^ Variable valve gear, valvetronic
^ Mechanical components/functions, then page right
^ Select test plan
^ Select item 6 then page right
^ Select item 1 "Reading/programming minimum lift"
^ Follow the diagnosis instructions.
^ Answer the question "Do you want to adjust the minimum lift?" with NO
^ The following message appears: "The minimum lift had already been adjusted to the maximum value of 0.8 mm. Do you want to attempt to reduce the minimum lift to 0.1 mm
^ Answer Yes and Confirm
^ Answer the question "Is this value to be permanently programmed?" with Yes
^ Follow the diagnosis instructions
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 385. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-245) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 385 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
