Service Action: Reposition Tension Strings

SITUATION

The tension strings on some early production E64s were installed in such a way that they could possibly get caught in the stowage compartment latches.

BMW is conducting a Service Action to correct the position of the strings.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves 645Cic vehicles which were produced in 12/03. In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

Operate the top until the rear section is positioned vertically.





Note: Drivers side shown. The repair must be performed on both sides.

Loosen the T20 screw holding the inner mount of the string, and turn the mount to the position indicated (1). Tighten the screw to 2.5 Nm.

Pull the T shaped plastic anchor on the opposite end of the string out of the tubular seal, apply Loctite Black Max (Loctite number 38050), or Wurth Rubberized Super Glue, (Article, No. 893 4103) to the crossbar of the T, and reinstall in the seal.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS





This Service Action has been assigned code number 407. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-253) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 407 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recal Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
