SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 04E-A04: Reprogram DME for Oxygen Sensor Diagnostics on E53, E60, E63, E64, E65/66 with N62 and N73

MODEL
E53 4.4i with N62 from 01/2003 through 5/2004
E65/E66 with N62, N73, 745i, 745iL, 760iL from 01/2003 through 5/2004 E60/63/64 with N62 from 08/2003 through 08/2004

SITUATION

The DME programming as originally installed, could cause the oxygen sensor diagnostic software to work incorrectly. In certain conditions, DME diagnostic software may fail to detect an oxygen sensor fault. In such a case, if exhaust emissions exceed the emission control limits, there will be no entry into the DME fault memory and the Service Engine Soon light will not be illuminated.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles. With completion of this campaign, the software in the E65/E66 vehicle's control units will be updated as described in SI B61 03 04.

A copy of the customer letter is shown.

To minimize the customer inconvenience caused by this Recall Campaign, pick-up (and deliver after repair) the affected vehicle from customer's home and provide appropriate alternative transportation.

Customers will be impressed when you return their cars cleaned inside and out and with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling and valet costs may be found in the Warranty portion of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall Campaign involves X5 4.4i, 745i, and 745iL vehicles with N62 engines and 760i/760iL vehicles with N73 engines, which were produced from 01/01/2003 through 05/26/2004. Also included are 545i, 645Ci and 645Cic with N62 engines produced from 08/2003 through 08/2004.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are Only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

[NEW] CORRECTION

Check for installation of SD 92-277. If found, the campaign has been performed. No further action is required.

On E53 X5 4.4i vehicles, reprogram and recode the DME using DIS CD 39.0 or higher.

On E65/66 745i/745iL/760i/760iL vehicles, update and recode the complete vehicle using CIP 12.0 or higher.

On E60/63/64 545i/645Ci/645Cic vehicles, update and recode the complete vehicle using CIP 13.1 or higher.

To update the complete vehicle with CIP, follow instructions from SI B09 05 01. After the software update is completed, recode the complete vehicle according to procedure "E" from SI B09 05 01.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
On E60/63/64 vehicles equipped with CCC, to avoid or reduce TCU or CCC programming aborts, follow the special CIP programming procedure from TIS Measure B09 211 04 (November '04) prior to programming the complete vehicle with CIP via SSS (Software Service Station).

This procedure must be used until further notice.
