SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 07E-A02: SMG Reprogramming

MODEL
E60, E63, and E64 with M54, N52, N62, N62TU engines and SMG transmission from SOP up to 6/26/2007

SITUATION
The SMG transmission module programming, as originally installed, may interfere with the testing equipment of independent facilities when attempting to establish communication with the vehicle.

This diagnostic software error would not cause any drivability problems.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to reprogram the SMG module on all affected vehicles. With the completion of this campaign, the software in the E60, E63, and E64 vehicle's control units will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B.

A copy of the customer letter is included.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 525i, 530i, 545i, 550i, 645Ci, 645Cic and 650i Coupe, and 650i Convertible vehicles with M54, N52, N62, and N62TU engines which were produced from start of series production up to 6/26/2007.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Perform a programming update and complete vehicle coding as per SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B using the latest version of Progman to vehicle integration level (Vehicle Data Status): E060-07-09-515) or higher.

Use only an approved BMW battery charger set to "Power Supply" mode and properly configured to the proper battery AH rating.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

After the vehicle has been checked and corrected,
obtain a label (SD 92-359) and with a ballpoint pen
print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall
Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity
of 10 labels has been sent to all BMW automotive
centers. Peel the label from its backing and affix it to
the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine
compartment, close to windshield.

Additional labels (strip of 10) may be ordered on TIS.

For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall on their vehicle has been completed.

Note:
Additional labels can be ordered on line at BMW TIS.
