SUBJECT
TCU Fails to Code CoApi 1000 General Fault

MODEL
E65, E66 (7 Series) produced from 1/03 to 3/05

SITUATION

When the TCU (Telematics Control Unit) is included in the Measures Plan in CIP) and is reprogrammed, the coding fails with "CoApi 1000 General Fault" displayed in the Final Report. At this point some BMW Assist and/or phone functions will not operate correctly.

CAUSE

1. Vehicles produced from 1/03 to 12/03 may have a faulty TCU embedded phone.

2. The CIP) software (CIP 16.x) may be corrupt after a software update (DVD or Online Update).

PROCEDURE

1. If coding fails on the original TCU, check the label of the TCU for one of the following part numbers

^ 84 11 6 934 101

^ 84 11 6 935 268

^ 84 11 6 937 678

2. If the TCU is one of these part numbers then enter into diagnosis using the DIS/GT1. Perform a short test and ensure all control modules are identified.

3. Select TCU/Diagnosis request and read the ESN and MIN.

4. If the error message "ERROR_ECU_BUSY_REPEAT_REQUEST COULD NOT READ ESN" is displayed the TCU embedded phone is faulty and the TCU needs to be replaced.

5. If the ESN and MIN can be read correctly, then continue with the next step.

6. [NEW] Recode the TCU with CIP 17.01 or later.

7. [NEW] If the TCU needs to be replaced as in step 4 create a PuMA QC-Info.

[NEW] It is no longer necessary to send the defective TCU to engineering for analysis.
