SUBJECT
Service Action: Check Telematics Control Unit (TCU) and Replace if Necessary

MODEL
E65, E66 (7 Series)

SITUATION

The TCU may not make a BMW Assist(TM) call if an airbag is deployed or the Mayday button is pressed.

To minimize customer's inconvenience caused by this service action, pick-up (and deliver after repair) the affected vehicle from customer's home or provide appropriate alternative transportation.

Customers will be impressed when you return their cars cleaned inside and out and with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling and valet costs may be found in the Warranty portion of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E65 & E66 (7 Series) vehicles, which were produced from August 28, 2002 to August 28, 2003.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

A defective Network Access Device (NAD) within the TCU.

PROCEDURE

1. Connect the vehicle to an approved BMW battery charger.

2. Perform a short test with the DISplus/GT1

NOTE:
In order to record the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) of the TCU installed in the vehicle, FASTA must be activated in the DISplus/GT1. For details on activating FASTA, refer to SI B07 07 01.

3. Using the following path within the DIS or GT1 with DIS V45 or higher, check to see if it is possible to read the Electronic Serial Number (ESN), Mobile Identification Number (MIN).

^ Function Selection

^ Complete vehicle

^ Body

^ Audio, video, navigation (MOST)

^ Telecommunication

^ Fixed Installation

^ Check internal telephone module (US variant)

^ Select test plan

^ Select test module - Check internal telephone module (US variant) B8400_00365

4. If the error message "ERROR_ECU_BUSY_REPEAT_REQUEST COULD NOT READ ESN" is displayed the Network Access Device (NAD) is faulty and should be replaced. Refer to TIS (RA 84 11627) for the TCU replacement procedure.

5. If the test module displays the ESN and MIN, the NAD is OK and the TCU does not need to be replaced. Proceed to step [NEW] 7.

6. Before installing the new TCU, remove one copy of the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) label and place it on the repair order for reference during warranty claim entry. You will be asked for the new TCU "ESN" when submitting a claim via DCSnet. Refer to SI B01 10 05 for more details.

The second ESN label of the TCU should be affixed over the existing label in the Owner's Manual insert (P/N 01 49 0 157 963).

7. Program the complete vehicle per SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming),

^ TCU Replacement: Use procedure A, using CIP 21.02.00 (Target Data Status E065-06-03-810) or higher.

Note:
This will automatically update any control modules not at the latest software level.

^ No TCU replacement: Use procedure E, using CIP 21.02.00 (Target Data Status E065-06-03-810) or higher.

Note:
This will automatically update any control modules not at the latest software level.

8. Test the BMW Assist(TM) service for proper operation by placing a test call (press the Mayday "SOS" button). Make sure the BMW Assist Response Center has received the correct MIN/MDN, VIN and location for the vehicle. Have the representative update their records as needed.

PARTS INFORMATION

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 447. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-311) and:

a. Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. Punch out code number 447 (2) printed on the label and,

c. Affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
