E53, E60, E65/66 with N62; DME Fault Codes 278B and 278D
Complaint
Service Engine Soon is displayed in CD, or Check Engine Light is illuminated in the cluster.
On vehicles equipped with a temperature gauge, erroneous overheating condition is indicated by the needle ("needle in the red zone") after extended engine idle warm-up in the morning.
The following faults are stored in DME:
FC 278B - Engine temperature plausibility and/or,
FC 278D - Radiator outlet temperature plausibility.
Cause
DME software error.
Measure
For X5 4.4 with N62:
On a customer complaint basis only, contact Technical Hotline - Drivetrain for a contact number.
After the approval/contact number is obtained from Technical Hotline, ship (using Fed-Ex only) the DME control module for reprogramming to;

Important:
Only cases with a contact number, and only shipments via Fed-Ex, will be processed. In order to improve DME handling time, please write your authorization contact number on the Fed-Ex label.
After the reprogrammed DME is installed in the vehicle, it has to be recoded with DIS CD 36 with the first update, or higher. Select ZCS Coding, scroll to the second page and select MOTRONIC. Proceed with coding instructions.
After recoding clear the fault memory.
The improved DME software is planned for service introduction with DIS CD 37.0.
For E60 and E65166 with N62;
The DME improved software is planned for service release in March '04, with the new integration level (in CIP 11.0).
In case of customer complaint:
1. Perform DIS test module.
2. Transfer data through FASTA.
3. Send a case to Technical Hotline /Drivetrain using PUMA.
4. Do not replace any hardware (e.g. temp sensor).
5. Clear fault memory, release vehicle.
