SI B 72 21 06
Safety Restraint Systems

October 2006
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.M. B72 201 04 dated March 2004.

SUBJECT
Rear Seat Occupancy Detection, Belt Buckle

MODEL
E65, E66 (7 Series) Vehicles produced from March 2004 and later

SITUATION
No longer possible to buckle the left and right seat belt in the rear using the central belt buckle

CAUSE
Seat occupancy detection has been deleted from the rear outer left and right sears commencing March 2004.

From March 2004, the seat occupancy detection function will be provided by a Hall sensor in the rear left and right outer belt buckles.

PROCEDURE
Vehicles up to March 2004

Seat occupancy detection detects an occupant and triggers the belt tensioner in the event of a car crash.

Vehicles from March 2004 and later:

A Hall sensor in the belt buckle detects that someone is wearing the belt and triggers the belt tensioner in the event of a crash. For safety reasons, the new belt buckles are coded with the buckle tongues. This means that it is no longer possible to lock the belt into the central belt buckle.
