Technical Service
This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.M. B11 204 03 dated June 2003.
SUBJECT
Replacement of Valvetronic Components - Helpful Hints
MODEL
E65, E66 with N62 engine up to 03/05
SITUATION
Possible customer complaints of rough idle when warm. Additionally, the "Service Engine Soon" light may be illuminated with faults stored for additive mixture adaptation beyond limits on one or both banks.
CAUSE
Unfavorable tolerances within the Valvetronic components.
PROCEDURE
If requested by the Technical Hotline to replace individual Valvetronic components on a cylinder head, the following tips will help ensure accurate assembly.
Eccentric shaft replacement
- The part number for the eccentric shaft is the same regardless of cylinder bank. When installed correctly, the smooth surface of the eccentric lobes is always in contact with the top roller on the intermediate lever. If installed incorrectly, the top roller on the intermediate lever will contact the unfinished surface of the eccentric shaft when the shaft is in the minimum lift position.
- The magnet wheel for the eccentric shaft position sensor must be attached to the eccentric shaft using its non-magnetic bolt. The magnet wheel itself is not bank specific.
- The roller lever assembly that contacts the compensation spring at the front of the cylinder head is bank specific and is marked 1-4, or 5-8.
Intermediate lever replacement
- All intermediate levers from one cylinder head are of the same classification, and must be replaced with levers of the same classification.
Drag lever (rocker arm) replacement
- The drag levers are also divided into different classifications. However, the specific position and classification of the rockers must be noted since different classification drag levers may be installed on the same cylinder head.
