PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 06E-A02: N62 - Crankcase Ventilation Valves Replacement
MODEL
E53, E60, E63, E64, E65, E66 with N62 from Series introduction up to 06/30/2004
SITUATION
The diaphragms in the crankcase ventilation valves on N62 engines may become brittle and may start to leak vacuum into the engine intake system. As a result, one or all, of the following scenarios may occur:
^ Customer may hear a whistling noise from the engine area,
^ Service Engine Soon light may be illuminated, and
^ Mixture adaptation faults may be stored in the DME.
In order to remedy the situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to replace crankcase ventilation valves on all affected vehicles.
A copy of the customer letter is included.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 545i/iA, 645Ci/CiA/Cic/CicA, 745i/Li, X5 4.4iA and X5 4.8isA vehicles with N62 engines, which were produced from Series introduction up to 06/30/2004.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
On affected vehicles replace the crankcase ventilation valves on both cylinder banks using improved parts (P/N 11 12 7 547 058). Please note that the repair kit contains sufficient parts to repair one crankcase vent valve. To complete this repair procedure, order two valves kits.
PROCEDURE
Remove the 4 screws securing the acoustic cover (1) to the engine. Remove
towards the front.
Remove the trim covers from both valve covers to expose the crankcase vent
valves (1). Using a pick (2), release the six clips securing the vent valve.
Remove the vent valve cover (1), diaphragm (2), and spring (3). The replacement repair kit consists of all three parts. Install in the reverse order ensuring that the cover is in the correct position (see illustration) and that all six clips are securely and positively
engaged.
