SUBJECT
Service Action: Reprogram the SMG Control Unit

MODEL
E46 M3 with the S54 Engine from start of production through August 3, 2004.

SITUATION
Simultaneous operation of the starter motor and the pump for the SMG hydraulic control unit may cause the switch contacts within the SMG relay to wear prematurely. If the relay fails as a result of this wear, no hydraulic pressure will be available to the SMG transmission. Subsequently, the unit will not be capable of shifting. The vehicle will operate in emergency mode and the fault lamp will be illuminated in the instrument cluster.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E46 M3 vehicles with the S54 engine which were produced from start of production through August 3, 2004.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Model Chassis Number Range

E46 M3 convertible EX22135 - EX24999
E46 M3 coupe JR12921 - JR12922
E46 M3 coupe JR12957
E46 M3 coupe JR13892 - JR24999
E46 M3 convertible PK00002 - PK08189
E46 M3 coupe PN55000 - PN59969

[NEW]CORRECTION
Reprogram SMG control module using SSS loaded with the current version of Progman.

The improved SMG software is available form DIS/GT1 CD 39, or higher.

Important:
It is NOT necessary to perform any of the SMG Teach-in Transmission procedures (e.g. "Teach-in clutch valve characteristic values", "Adapt compete transmission", or "Teach-in clutch slip point") after reprogramming of the SMG control module.

Readapting complete transmission, or clutch characteristic/biting point after SMG module programming, may cause the complaints of harsh shifting or incorrect clutch engagement.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 423. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-267) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 423 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service action will be via Campaign Entry
