Coolant: Service and Repair

17 00 005 - Draining and adding coolant (M54/N46)





Special tools required:
- 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit





Warning!
Danger of scalding!

Only carry out work on the cooling system after the engine has cooled down!





Protective measures/rules of conduct:

- Wear protective goggles
- Wear protective gloves
- Observe national/country-specific regulations





Important!
Risk of slipping due to coolant on the floor.

Danger of injury!

Catch and dispose of drained coolant in drip tray (1) and if necessary special tool 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit (universal hydraulic lifter).

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- E85: Remove radiator cover
- E83: Remove intake duct
- Remove engine underbody protection
- Remove reinforcement plate Service and Repair

Note:
All illustrations feature the E85.

Draining coolant:

Open cap (1) on coolant expansion tank.





Open drain plug (1) on radiator at bottom.

Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Open drain plug (2) on coolant expansion tank at bottom.

Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Installation Note:
Replace sealing ring.

Tightening torque 17 11 2AZ [1][2]17 11 Radiator and Mounting Parts.





Open drain plug (1) on engine block.

Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Installation Note:
Replace sealing ring.

Tightening torque 11 11 5AZ 11 11 Engine Block.





Adding coolant:

Open vent screw (1).





Before filling:

- Switch ignition on
- Set heater control to maximum temperature.
- Set fan to low setting. This opens the heating valves.
Perform filling operation slowly.

Close vent screw when bubble-free coolant emerges Fill coolant expansion tank to max. cold fill level. Marking (2) is then on a level with upper edge of coolant expansion tank.

Note:
Use only recommended coolant.
