Important!
After completion of work, check transmission oil level Procedures.
Use only the approved gear oil.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery Instructions for Disconnecting and Connecting Battery.
- Remove front underbody protection.
- Remove reinforcement plate Service and Repair.
Important notes on installation are described in this work step.
- Remove complete exhaust system Service and Repair.
- Remove heat shield.
- Remove front propeller shaft at transfer box and tie to one side.
Supporting engine and transmission:
- Install special tool 11 0 250 11 0 250 Engine Support between dome cross-brace and engine suspension eye and secure with dowel pin.
- Pretension special tool with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A".
Engine secured in installation position.
Installation position, measurement "A" = 36 cm.

Installation:
Adjust selector lever Adjustments
Release screws (1).
Remove holder with shift cable (2).
Unscrew bolt (1).
Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.
Installation Note:
Replace sealing rings.
Release screw (1) on engine carrier.

Release all screws of torque converter with special tool 24 1 110 24 1 110 Socket with Magnet.
Crank engine further and release remaining 2 screws.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ [1][2]Specifications.
Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, insert special tools 24 4 131 24 4 130 Locating Tool / 24 4 137 24 4 130 Locating Tool in opening in transmission housing.
Clamp torque converter.
Installation Note:
Before joining transmission with engine, remove special tools 24 4 131 24 4 130 Locating Tool / 24 4 137 24 4 130 Locating Tool.
Unfasten screws and remove cross member.

Unlock plug (1) and remove.
Unclip cable from transmission housing.
Lowering transmission:
- Turn special tool 11 0 250 11 0 250 Engine Support back with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A".
Transmission in removal position.
Transmission removal position, measurement "A" = approx. 34 cm.
Important!
Risk of damage:
When lowering the transmission, make sure the engine does not rest against the bulkhead.
Support transmission with special tools 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305.
Unscrew bolt (1).
Tightening torque 24 11 2AZ Transmission Housing, Transmission Oil Sump.
Unfasten screws.
Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ Transmission in General.
Pull transmission of engine towards rear and lower.
Installation:
Check dowel sleeves (1) and (2) for correct seating.
Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
Important!
When joining up engine and transmission, ensure ease of movement of torque converter.
Installation:
The sheet metal flywheel is equipped with three recesses for the torque converter retaining tabs.
When guiding the engine and transmission together the three mounting tabs on the torque converter must be aligned with the three indentations in the sheet metal flywheel.
Non-conformance leads to follow-up damage on the automatic transmission.
Turning on the torque converter, or engine, is no longer possible after guiding the engine and transmission together and would lead to damage.
Installation Note:
Before installing transmission cross-member, turn special tool 11 0 250 11 0 250 Engine Support back with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A" (installation position).
Installation position, measurement "A" = approx. 36 cm.
